Tandem Cycling

Program Overview

Every Tuesday Night you will find tires tearing up the Nashville Motor Speedway at the Nashville Fairgrounds.  But, it is not your normal speed daemons laying down the rubber, it is the TNABA & Harpeth Bike Clubs “VISON BIKE” program.  Sighted captains team up with visually impaired stokers to ride tandem bikes each week, for a great evening of fun and amazing exercise.  The HBC captions provide the bikes and vision, with the visually impaired stokers provide the power and inspiration.  Each week TNABA athletes take to the track in a safe riding environment, with trained well seasoned captains and learn the beauty of cycling, teamwork, and perseverance, ultimately taking the steps to live active and productive lifestyles.

Program HISTORY

In the Spring of 2009 after attending a USABA cycling training camp, as a volunteer captain, at the Olympic Training Center , Mike Willman came back to his Harpeth Bike Club with a vision to bring cycling to the blind community in his home town.  On  April  14 Ricky and Dwaine Jones were teamed up with Mike Willman and Les Wooldridgefor the first ever TNABA event and TNABA tandem cycling event.  Two weeks later over 14 captains and stokers teamed up and road for the first “VISION BIKE” ride.  Since then, over 32 different visually impaired individuals have been able to participate in

this great program.  TNABA blind stokers have been the honorary ride leaders  for the Harpeth River Ride each years since the beginning of this program, along with other adaptive athletes and wounded warriors from around the country.    The partnership with the Harpeth Bike Club and TNABA has been truly inspirational and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
